The Trio
The Dory Bavarsky Trio plays standards and originals, always searching for innovative methods of expression within a classic Jazz format. In exploring the Great American Songbook, the trio creates a vast spectrum of moods and tones ranging from the playful and humorous to the lyrical and contemplative.
Dory Bavarsky - Piano
Dory Bavarsky began studying piano at age 6. After earning a degree in music composition from the College of Creative Studies at UC Santa Barbara, he returned to Los Angeles where he now works as a composer and pianist. Primarily a Jazz performer, his playing draws upon his classical training, years of experience working as a pianist in a variety of styles, and his ongoing studies in composition and improvisation.
Matt Van Benschoten - Bass
Matt Van Benschoten studied double bass, voice, and jazz improvisation at UCLA under Peter Mercurio, Irv Windward, and Gary Gray. He has performed at both the Playboy and Long Beach Jazz Festivals. His major influences include Leroy Vinnegar, Ron Carter, Stanley Clarke, Scott LaFaro, and Jaco Pastorius. According to David Lewis of Cadence Magazine, Matt is a “ most inventive and substantial soloist.”
Gus Duffy - Drums
A drummer since age 8 and a professional musician at 15, Gus now balances a career as an architect with a lifelong love for playing jazz drums. A brush specialist in the tradition of Vernell Fournier, Joe Morello, and Jimmy Cobb, Gus counts Peter Erskine and Matt Wilson as his mentors. “The precision and permanence of architecture informs the spontaneity and creativity of jazz — and vice versa.”
